This was Mike Tyson's mansion, which was located down the street from Don King's training facilty. It was built in 1982 and had all the flare of the 80's. Gold trim, zebra print carpet, fake marble flooring and mirrors everywhere. It's in the process of being renovated, so it's lost some of it's allure, but it was still fun to check out.

History Lesson

The city's first and only public hospital, [this place] closed in May 2001 after serving the residents for nearly two hundred years. Consisting of a number of clinics such as Women's Services, Detoxification Center, and Southeast Sexually Transmitted Diseases Clinic.

The [hospital], the first public hospital established in 1806, was moved to this site in 1846. By then it was called the [city] Asylum and housed the city's indigent patients. It also served as a work house for people convicted of minor crimes. Later, a smallpox hospital, quarantine station, disinfection plant, and crematory were also located in this area. With the construction of a new building, the health-care facility became the [this place] Hospital in 1922, and was renamed [this place] in 1953. The controversial closing of the public hospital in 2001 ended the inpatient services and the city's indigent health care system was transferred mostly to the Greater [this place] Hospital. The [city] Jail is located to the south of this historic health-care complex.

Present Day

This is one of the sexiest morgues (probably poor choice of words) I've ever been in. It is located at my (hands down) favorite place to explore in my immediate area. They have started demolition on portions of this complex, so I wanted to ensure I finished photographing it, before it was too late. The pediatric center is already gone, which I'm definitely not a fan of. At this point the hospital is sealed up tight, but they do have the underground tunnels that are readily available.

Sections of this hospital closed in 1985 (admin), 1997 (psychiatric), 2000 (pediatrics) and 2001 for the autopsy/morgue. This is still a very active facility (STD Clinic and Drug Treatment Clinic) that is populated with some interesting characters, and also has an active medium security jail on the grounds. #Good times.

Milk Drinkers Make Better Lovers...

After a failed attempt to check out a hospital in the area, I started taking random interstate exits in rural Virginia. Needless to say, I found an abandoned farm. My visit was cut short by hunters in the area, but overall it was a pretty cool location, with some questionable finds. Something obviously happened in this area, but I'm no CSI operative. [shrugs]

Abandoned Silk Mill

History Lesson

The silk mill in [this place], was in operation from 1907-1957. Construction of the Klotz Throwing Mill Company began in 1905. Initially, silk was imported from Japan and China and the factory produced silk thread and, during World War II, rayon. In the 1920s the payroll included over 300 people, but in later years fewer than 200 worked there, and by the 1950s antiquated machines in a small mill made competition with larger facilities difficult. In 1957 the mill closed. An employee in the 1940s, stated “it (the mill) kept the bread and butter on a lot of people’s tables because of the coal mine strikes and other problems, and it really helped the economy.”

Present Day

This place still stands as it did when it closed it's doors. It was literally a time warp into 1957, as this silk mill closed its doors forever that year, and has been relatively untouched since then. The calendars and safety posters still hung on the walls, and lockers were filled with workers personal belongings from that era. Pretty dope!

This is one of my favorite locations. I wanted to wait for some crystal clear skies and a little bit warmer weather before my return. So when that day came I broke my Sunday exploring rule and went on a Friday. Still a great time, although a lot of foot traffic and maintenance workers around.

Abandoned Hospital on the Hill

This place is a classic in my home state. It's made of beautiful stone work and has a very striking architechure. It was the first state funded tuberculosis sanatorium, and later became a state hospital and in 1965 became a reform school for boys. It's located on an active campus in the middle of nowhere. Very cool place overall and well worth the trip!

I was in the area, so I checked out an abandoned coal-based power facility. It was pretty tough to shoot do to the heavy rain, lack of lighting, and my overall lack of experience shooting an industrial location, but all in all I had a good time here and wrapped things up rather quickly. I'm assuming the closure was sometime in the late 80's.

Abandoned Naval Hospital AKA "Fuzzy Naval"

A fantastic location that looks out over the waters of the Patapsco River and the Chesapeake Bay. Has an absolutely amazing view, but I wish it was in better condition. This is a very common place in our region so its had PLENTY of visitors, and unfortunately they didn't treat it with the same respect.

On the base there are huge & beautiful empty houses on location that I'm sure could be worth a fortune. They were Army officer’s homes in the early 1900s, when the place was originally an Army fort. There are other unused World War One Era Army buildings there in various states of decay. There is beautiful, spacious open ground all around there.

I definitely wouldn't mind checking out the rest of the buildings in the near future either..

Abandoned Psychiatric Hospital AKA "Greasy Asylum"

This place is one of the oldest psychiatric hospital's in the United States. It was constructed in the late 1700's. This place has a very rich history is absolutely amazing to explore!

It's filled with mounds of asbestos and lead hazards, but with a P100 mask or better you're good to go. I spent about 3 hours in here and went without a tripod to shoot. Needless to say I had a blast and found some fantastic treasures in here. It's located on an active campus and heavily patrolled by OMH, daily.

Not a single mark of graffiti or vandalism in this place. Gotta love it!

Abandoned Youth Detention Center (Bmore)

Explored! January 9th, 2010.

This youth detention center is located on a hilltop in the suburbs of Baltimore next to a brand new and active facility. I was greeted with trails of fresh blood (deer blood, I believe) in the snow on my way up and I heard; people talking, trucks driving by, and actually had somebody walk into one of the buildings I was exploring. So after a few "rambo mode" moments hiding in the woodline & jumping into a closet in the admin building, I continued on. This place has a rich history and both of the buildings I visited this day were essentially left as-is from the day it closed. One room was FILLED with trash bags full of inmates clothing. Untouched for several years...

I didn't get to visit all the buildings on this property so this is still a work in progress. I had a great time here and will be back in the very near future. Hopefully there will be a little less traffic coming in and out of there too.

Oh and I was approached by a pretty upset donkey while making my way back into the woodline. *shrugs*

Abandoned Mental Health Clinic

This place was very intriguing to me from the outside. It looked as though it was untouched for over 15 years or so. It was in a forgotten corner of a active campus, so I wanted to check it out. Upon entering I could see that metal/copper scrappers (probably legal ones) had done a number to almost all of the rooms. Not much left to see.

This place had several different floors that housed a series of different types of patients. One floor was a minimum security holding area, another for adolescent youth, a search and seizure lock-down floor and psychology unit on the top floor. It seemed that the higher I went up the less damaged the building was. The basement was really odd, but kind of cool.

Abandoned Youth Detention Center

This place just shut down in 2009 shortly after Maya Angelou paid a visit to the facility in May. So it looks pretty much the same way that it did while it was in operation. All the lights were still on, A/C was on FULL BLAST (it was freezing in the buildings), and even the football field scoreboard was lit up! Excellent waste of tax money...

This was a youth detention center for teenagers awaiting trial in Washington DC - it was infamous for shady teachers, escaped inmates, and poor living conditions. A new active site is right up the road, leaving this place ripe for exploring..

Abandoned Children's Mental Hospital

Explored! January 18th & February 20th, 2010.

This abandoned mental hospital was notorious for its poor conditions and abuse of patients. It opened its doors in 1925, and was shut down in 1991 by a federal court. There have since been numerous civil and class-action lawsuits involving patients and employees of this place.

During the early years, ______ _____ was considered a "state of the art" facility. With a good reputation this hospital set the standard for other states to follow. With declining conditions decades later many patients filed lawsuits against the hospital for reasons of abuse, neglect, poor living conditions... even medical testing. A small morgue was all that stood between the patients and a cemetery on site where graves have been repeatedly uncovered by erosion.

This is another place that looks like one day the staff just "disappeared" and left it as-is! It is filled with creepy vibes (some more so than others) and is an overall excellent place to explore. It is a CLASSIC in my home state! I've been twice now and have only seen about half of the buildings, so this is still a work in progress... Enjoy!

Parents Of Earth Pediatrics Center

Abandoned Pediatric Center - Explored! January 31st & February 13th, 2010.

This place was simply incredible! So good that I had to come back for seconds two weeks later. It once was a Pediatric center that offered several different services for parents in a low-income neighborhood. It housed an optometry unit, audio/visual, physical therapy, and many other services for disabled or handicapped children.

This place was LOADED with excellent finds in nearly every room and looks almost as though the people that once worked here just disappeared one day and the buildings were left as-is. Literally!
It was a bit disturbing because parts of this building closed in the late 90's and the rest following suit in the early 2000's... but you would have thought this place operated in the early eighties!!!
Everything was so out-dated and run down. The toys, equipment, and wheelchairs were from the seventies for the most part. It just goes to show that low-income people are the lowest priority when it comes to healthcare.

This place still remains in great condition for exploring because it is in a very high secured area and its patrolled regularly. So it keeps the kids and bootleg graffiti artists out. I hope it stays that way indefinitely, because I really enjoyed taking pictures in here!

Abandoned Paper Mill

This is part one of my Valentine's Day exploring trip in Pennsylvania.

My initial explore of the day was an abandoned paper mill which was filled with asbestos and unique equipment. This location was loaded with some of the coolest signage from back in the days as well. It was definitely a real pain in the ass gaining access here because of the 3 feet of snow around the entire building; but if there is a will, there is a way! So I trekked through the snow dropped down a very tight space and had a little bit (a lot) more hang time than expected and landed not so gracefully... Nonetheless I dusted myself off, powered up the camera, and I spent a few hours in here shooting and thoroughly enjoyed myself at this location. It was filled with a beautiful light green color and excellent natural light on most of the floors!

Abandoned Prison In Pennsylvania

I went out to do some Valentine's Day exploring and decided to check out a few places in Pennsylvania.

The second place that I visited was an abandoned prison which has been standing silently for over 30 years in the middle of a pretty rough neighborhood. Once a pretty popular "hobo den" in the eighties it is filled with a few really cool finds and plenty of old school style malt liquor and typical whino cans/bottles; but if you look a little harder (or scale down the collapsed basement staircase) you'll find some even cooler things in this place. I had a good time at this location and tried my best to make a building with a lot of similar floors look even more interesting. Not a particularly easy task to do.
